About Down Island Gulf Seafood Restaurant
Down Island presents Gulf seafood through the perspective of a chef-owned, family-operated restaurant rather than a standard beach-menu formula. The kitchen combines raw-bar selections, wood-fired cooking, Gulf South flavors, and substantial non-seafood choices in a building on U.S. 98. There is no Gulf view, but the interior is deliberately connected to coastal culture through regional art, driftwood, music memorabilia, and handmade pottery created by founding chef Brannon Janca.
The current dinner menu illustrates the restaurant’s range. Raw oysters, chilled shrimp, smoked fish dip, tuna poke, wood-fired oysters, crab-and-leek soup, seafood baskets, fish of the day, crab-crusted grouper, chicken, pork, steak, and a house burger can appear alongside changing seasonal dishes. Lunch adds po’boys, salads, bowls, and baskets, while Sunday brunch has its own service. The kitchen emphasizes scratch preparation and states that many dishes can be modified for dietary needs, although it is not a certified gluten-free or kosher facility.
The schedule is more structured than the old directory entry suggests. Down Island is closed Monday. Lunch runs Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Happy hour is Tuesday through Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. with a limited menu. Dinner is Tuesday through Sunday from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday brings late-night music, with the bar continuing after dinner service. The official 2026 site now states that reservations are accepted for nightly dinner and Sunday brunch, so the previous “walk-in only” note should be corrected.
To-go orders are offered only when the restaurant is not experiencing a wait, and a sustainability fee is added for packaging. That policy prevents the kitchen from overloading during peak service. Parties of eight or more receive an automatic gratuity, and diners bringing wine should ask about the current corkage charge. Guests with complex allergies are encouraged to call ahead and speak with the restaurant before arriving.
The parking lot is on-site, and the building sits on the north side of U.S. 98 about a quarter mile east of County Highway 393. A large roadside sign helps identify it. The ground-level dining room and patio are easier to access than many town-center restaurants. Friday music and special events can increase traffic and volume, while lunch generally offers a quieter introduction to the menu.
Down Island’s story is inseparable from Brannon Janca, who opened the restaurant in 2022 after a career that included New Orleans training and years in Gulf Coast kitchens. Following his death in 2023, the restaurant has continued the creative, music-filled, community-oriented concept he established. That history should be handled respectfully rather than reduced to a marketing anecdote.
The restaurant is a strong choice for diners who want Gulf seafood with more technique and personality than a typical fried-seafood menu. It also works for mixed groups because steak, chicken, pork, a burger, salads, and dietary accommodations broaden the choices. Reservations, current music schedules, and the correct meal period should all be checked before visiting.
